I know he fluked a world cup semi final and wears a waistcoat but after 4 years in charge, he has never convinced me.
We're blessed with some amazing attacking talent but they're not being well utilised. Most of the time England are set out as a Big Sam set piece team.
The team largely looks like it's picked out of a hat. I mean, Phillips and Rice in midfield and Trippier at left back...
He has no idea about the best formation or best group of players after 4 years. He's picked around 70 players in 40 games. If you want to experiment or have a look at a player, do it on the training pitch.
Its time to stop tinkering and get the first 11 playing with each other every time to build an understanding.
It feels like he's constantly looking for the next generation but he needs to think about getting proven players to gel for Euro 2021

Irrespective of the manager, the England team is never going to match the hype that surrounds it. There is no passion to play for the nation or pride, that has been on the wane since the Premier League appeared. International football is now just a millionaires holiday.

Even Allardyce would have been embarrassed to put out a team with three central defenders and then two defensive midfielders in front. Grim. Maybe he's working on a new 7-0-3 formation for the Euros....

Have the England national side actually done anything since that 5-1 drubbing of German when Sven was boss?

Beating Argentina 1-0 in the 2002 World Cup and Spain 3-2 in the 2018/19 Nations League spring to mind (not sure if the last one counts really though). Although whether due to seeding or just good luck England always seem to avoid any decent opposition in either the qualifiers or group stages of major tournaments so it's perhaps a bit of an artificial picture.
This may very well be the best England team for a long time but when all they play are the part-timers of San Marino or a Covid depleted Poland it's hard to be sure how well they'd fare against quality opposition.

And with a second semi-final in two tournaments Southgate becomes England's most successful manager in fifty years....

We've been lucky with the draw, it's really opened up but of course I'll have to eat my words if he wins a trophy 😬
FYI here are the world rankings from the 2018 world cup England 12 Panama 55 Tunisia 21 Belgium 3 Croatia 20 Colombia 16 Sweden 24
Here are the ones for Euro 2020 England 3 Scotland 44 Croatia 14 Czech Rep 40 Germany 12 Ukraine 24 Denmark 10 Spain 6 Italy 7
In all credit the wins against Germany and Ukraine were very professional, but we will need to beat a few teams in the top 10 to actually win the thing

Well, we would have played Spain(6) and Portugal(5) but, while England were winning their group without conceding a goal, Spain failed to beat Poland or Sweden and Portugal were battered by Germany..... I think the fifa rankings are largely meaningless but if they do mean anything then surely you've got to give Southgate credit for helping make England the 3rd best team in the world Art's Amazing Fact - Under Southgate England have now won three knockout games in 90 minutes. That's the same number they have won in the previous 25 tournaments combined.
